Realtor.com Survey Reveals How NFL Fandom and Loyalty Shape Homebuying Decisions

According to a recent survey by Realtor.com®, NFL fandom significantly influences homebuying choices for many football enthusiasts, with approximately one in five fans reporting their loyalty played a key role in the search for a home. Among these fans, 18% were drawn to specific home features, like a covered porch or built-in bar.

Meanwhile, 20% prioritized layouts with spaces like basements or home theater entertainment rooms, and 18% sought cities or locations near stadiums. Two-thirds of those surveyed said watching football is more fun when you’re part of a community that supports the same team. And, 55% reported feeling more connected to their neighborhood or community by supporting the same team.

Realtor.com® Executive Editor and Real Estate Expert Charlie Lankston said, “When it comes to NFL fans and the teams they support, a connection to their community is a major driving force and influence. Creating a home is about so much more than buying a physical property—it is also about the community that we build around it. Our new survey shows that football and NFL play a vital role in how we see that community. And that team loyalty is actually less important to most people than their home and the people who surround it. So much so that nearly one-third of NFL fans would actually change teams if they moved to a new city or state.”

While team performance drives loyalty for 44% of fans, personal connections are nearly as influential. About 40% follow teams tied to their upbringing, 39% because of family traditions, and 38% because their current city or state represents the team.

Most NFL fans (67%) enjoy games in shared spaces like family rooms, while 29% have dedicated viewing areas, such as finished basements or theater rooms. Only 4% report not watching games at home.

Younger fans are particularly influenced by their love of football. Approximately 28% of Gen Z followers prioritize specific home features, while 29% of millennials focus on layouts suited for game-day viewing.

The survey was conducted online from August 22-24, 2024, with 2,201 U.S. adults polled for the survey
