Food Lion Celebrates Rewards Program Anniversary

Food Lion recently marked the second anniversary of its Shop & Earn MVP rewards program, noting that customers have saved more than $58 million through the program.

The grocery retailer based in Salisbury, N.C. with a 60-plus-year history, Food Lion has more than 1,000 stores in the United States, with the majority located in the Southeast.

“Shop & Earn continues to be a unique and innovative digital loyalty program that puts our customers in charge of their savings and allows them to easily get even more of what they need to nourish their families and set them up for success,” Deborah Sabo, senior vice president of Marketing at Food Lion, said in a company release. “What makes Shop & Earn so unique is that it offers customers options to save based on their specific purchases, fueling a program with nearly endless savings opportunities. The more our customers buy the items they love, the more they can save. It’s that easy.”

Food Lion says customized offers are available the first of each month, and customers can load them to either the Shop & Save landing page or the Food Lion mobile app. Customers then can track their progress and gain rewards during that month. Shoppers using Food Lion To-Go also can earn rewards, and then redeem them in-store. Notifications of rewards earned comes via the app and store receipts.

“Customers have until the last day of the month to earn rewards and rewards are automatically redeemed through the end of the following month,” the release states. “It’s as simple as load, shop and earn savings.”

This all comes after several achievements by Food Lion in 2019. After launching Food Lion To-Go grocery pickup service at multiple locations in June, Food Lion continued to increase the availability of Food Lion To-Go at 50 stores in Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The expansions began on October 14, and to help introduce customers to the new service, Food Lion offered shoppers their first pickup for free.

In August, Food Lion announced new plans for its hunger-relief initiative, Food Lion Feeds. To fight hunger in its operating area, Food Lion Feeds will expand its partnership with Feeding America, create new partnerships to address hunger, and donate 1 billion more meals by the end of 2025 to its neighbors in need.

Loyalty360 honored Food Lion multiple times last year. The brand received a pair of Best in Class Awards at the 2019 Loyalty360 Customer Expo, one for customer loyalty and another for customer experience strategy. Food Lion earned a Platinum Award for social impact and a Silver Award for loyalty program design at the Loyalty360 Awards in the spring.

“In the southeastern United States, Food Lion needs no introduction. It’s the go-to grocery store for millions of people in the region,” said Mark Johnson, CEO and CMO of Loyalty360. “Even in this loyalty-heavy space, Food Lion’s Shop & Earn program stands out as an exciting chapter in customer loyalty. The program employs a multichannel strategy that tracks and rewards shopping in real-time through its app and website. Given that immediacy, Shop & Earn has driven engagement as few other programs can.”
