Shopping loyalty app Shopkick yesterday annonced an initiative to allow small stores to join its retail program which so far has included mostly large retail chains such as Target, Best Buy or Macy’s.

Shopkick will install its small shopkick Signal box for free at the first 1,000 selected stores to enable its beneficial walk-in rewards program. The trial is sponsored by Citi, which has been an early investor in the start-up.

“We will do for small and medium-sized local stores what we have done for large, national chains: drive foot traffic,” said Cyriac Roeding, co-founder and CEO of shopkick. “With shopkick, stores also have the potential to increase basket size and margins, improve shopper engagement, and build customer frequency.”
A hundred small and medium-sized businesses in three cities have already been involved in a pilot program for the past couple of months.

Shopkick currently has 1.8 million users of its mobile app in the United States and offers rewards at 2,500 retail and 160 mall locations.
