RBC Rewards Enables Members to Pay for Bills with Points

Making the redemption experience even more rewarding, RBC’s Pay Bills with Points enables members to use their RBC Rewards points to cover everyday expenses like phone, internet, utility bills, and more. A first for any rewards program in Canada, RBC clients can use their points to pay bills through RBC’s mobile banking application and through online banking.

This development comes on the heels of another Canadian first launched by RBC last year, Pay with Points at Point of Sale, which provides members with the ability to use their RBC Rewards points to pay for everyday purchases virtually anywhere in stores across Canada.

“RBC Rewards is unique because it’s designed with our members at the center of everything we do, giving them the power to use their rewards for what’s most important to them, from the everyday to do’s like picking up groceries and paying bills to achieving their bucket list travel dreams with our market leading travel rewards,” says Jacquelina Calisto, Vice President, Loyalty & Rewards, RBC. “It’s what a rewards program should be.”

To use their points, RBC members need to log into their accounts and then:

  1. Go to the bill payments page and select the RBC Rewards tab
  2. Choose the bill they want to pay
  3. Enter the amount to be paid to convert into points
  4. Click submit to complete the payment

This is an extremely innovative strategy for points usage. Enabling members to redeem points by paying for bills should be a very effective method for strengthening loyalty. This offering may even be so powerful that it will become a standard across the customer loyalty space. Brands and vendors should pay attention to benchmark themselves.
