More retailers are using mobile coupons to lure deal hunters on-the-go.
In some cases, retailers send coupons via text message to the cell phones of customers who sign up to receive them. Consumers also can download coupons through various Web sites that focus on this growing e-commerce niche.
The market for mobile coupons is heating up amid the rapid growth of smart phones and mobile applications. Juniper Research forecasts consumer usage of mobile coupons will generate close to $6 billion globally in retail redemption value by 2014, up from some $2 billion this year. It expects the number of mobile coupon users to surpass 300 million by 2014.
In a tough economy, coupons gain in popularity.
“It’s an interaction of two things that makes mobile coupons ... incredibly attractive to consumers,” said Mike Minasi, president of marketing at grocery chain Safeway (SWY). “People are looking to save money and are increasingly using technology to solve problems.”
