Giant Food Launches Unique Community Space to Promote Healthy Living
Giant Food has unveiled a new community-focused initiative in Washington, D.C., with the reopening of its Healthy Living Center in December 2024. Situated in the food desert of Ward 8, where access to fresh groceries and health resources is limited, the center will provide vital health and wellness programming to the D.C. community. The center offers a variety of health-related services, such as nutrition education, financial literacy workshops, yoga classes, and nonprofit board meetings. It also collaborates with local universities, such as Georgetown and George Washington, to promote preventative healthcare and early screenings for conditions like cancer.
U.S. Representative Oye Owolewa, a pharmacist and Ward 9 resident said, “Anybody who lives in Ward 8 knows that this is our only grocery store, and for a lot of people in this community, this is our only healthcare site.”
The Healthy Living Center was originally opened by Giant Food in 2017, closing temporarily in 2020 due to the pandemic, and repurposed to administer COVID-19 vaccinations. After a renovation, the center reopened with a special event on December 10, 2024, to serve the community once again. To mark the reopening, a mural by local artist and Emmy award winner Doudgy Charmant was unveiled, depicting themes of Mother Nature, community, health, and wellness. The mural, which stretches across one of the center’s main walls, was designed to reflect the spirit of Ward 8. Giant is showcasing artwork by local artists, featuring their work on reusable grocery bags, with proceeds benefiting the National Cancer Center for Children and Families.
