Fresh Thyme Expands Afresh Partnership to Bring AI Technology to Enhance Inventory Management
Fresh Thyme Market is introducing AI-powered technology from Afresh to improve inventory management and ordering tasks in its prepared foods and deli departments. The Afresh Store Order for Food Service system will help employees manage inventory levels and place more accurate orders by providing AI-driven recommendations and automated ordering features. The rollout builds on the partnership between Fresh Thyme and Afresh, which started in 2019, initially focusing on the produce department but now extending to other fresh food sections.
Reducing food waste is a key priority for grocery retailers, and Fresh Thyme’s latest initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to address this challenge. Afresh’s technology uses AI to consider factors like product shelf life, seasonality, and imperfect register scanning. This allows it to make precise inventory adjustments that reduce waste. Specifically, in the prepared foods department, Afresh's system simplifies ingredient ordering, particularly for ingredients that are used across multiple recipes, while also accounting for possible ingredient substitutions.
By the end of 2024, Fresh Thyme plans to implement Afresh’s technology across all its “core” fresh food departments in all 70 of its stores. Other grocers, including Albertsons, Heinen’s, and Cub Foods, have also adopted Afresh’s AI platforms to enhance their sustainability efforts. Albertsons recently tested a new Afresh forecasting tool to improve demand forecasting for distribution centers.

Visa Report Highlights New Twists on Old-School Scams Targeting Consumers and Financial Institutions
Visa’s State of Scams: Fall 2024 Biannual Threats Report highlights an emerging trend in scams that leverage both old-school methods and digital advancements to exploit consumers, merchants, and financial institutions. With physical theft on the rise, scammers have taken advantage of the window that exists between a victim being aware that a theft has taken place and the actual theft itself. The scammers use stolen payment cards to purchase physical goods or gift cards to resell or use the card number for an online money transfer. A digital twist on the trend involves cybercriminals using mobile point-of-sale devices in crowded spaces to initiate unauthorized payments.
According to Visa Chief Risk and Client Services Officer Paul Fabara, “Visa invested $11 billion dollars in technology and infrastructure in the past five years, and our network is more secure than ever. As payments become safer, fraudsters are reverting to tried-and-true tactics that target the weakest link in the ecosystem: consumers. Visa is committed to removing risks across a transaction, regardless of how you’re paying, but that doesn’t mean consumers should let their guard down.”
According to the report, government impersonation scams are also on the rise, costing U.S. consumers an average of $14,000 per victim in the first quarter of 2024 alone. Scammers pose as government representatives from agencies like the USPS, IRS, or FBI. The report also examines emerging digital fraud methods, such as authentication bypass scams that circumvent two-factor authentication through phishing schemes. These increasingly sophisticated attacks are often carried out through generative AI tools and give fraudsters direct access to consumer accounts. Other reported scams include gas station fraud, where criminals make large fuel purchases on unauthorized accounts, and token provisioning fraud, where scammers cash out tokens from compromised accounts. Visa’s Payment Ecosystem Risk and Control (PERC) team continues to combat these evolving threats by deploying intelligence-driven solutions and strengthening risk controls across the payment system.
