Ford Next Pilots New Flexible Lease with Uber

Ford is partnering with Uber to make electric vehicles more accessible to rideshare drivers. The new program — called Ford Drive — will run a pilot on the Mustang Mach-E model in San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Ford Drive provides rideshare drivers with a flexible lease for between one- and four-month increments. Once the vehicle is delivered, drivers can use the Ford Drive app to manage payments and services, with maintenance conducted through dealers.

“We understand uptime and ease of use are critical to every rideshare driver. As more of them make the switch to electric vehicles, we’re building the Ford Drive program around their unique needs,” said Bill Knapp, who leads Ford Drive. “We’re glad that the initial feedback on this venture has been so strong, and it’s exciting to learn from these driver experiences to explore solutions supporting Uber and Ford’s shared electrification goals.”

Ford Drive is the latest initiative of the Ford Next division, which incubates and launches new businesses to create value for Ford by complementing Ford products, creating new business models, and improving customer experiences.

The new pilot expands on Ford and Uber’s previous flexible lease pilot in 2022, which was only in San Diego and only available through the Uber platform. The pilot is occurring in California because the state is Uber’s leading North American market for EV uptake.
