Transaction Growth Showed Improvement for Second Sequential Month
ATLANTA, Dec. 9, 2009 – First Data Corporation , a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing, today released First Data SpendTrend™ transaction data from the entire month of November 2009 compared to the same period last year. SpendTrend tracks same store consumer spending via credit, signature debit, PIN debit and EBT cards at U.S. merchant locations.
Overall transactions for the month showed a growth of 8.9% over 2008, despite one less shopping day in November 2009. Transactions in the month of October 2009 were 8.2% higher than the previous year.

Value retailers experienced a substantial 15.4% transaction growth, although all major industries posted positive gains. Average tickets rose during the month of November, however, several industries experienced a slight decline in average tickets year-over-year. Same store sales (volume) were up 6.2%.
“Our SpendTrend data indicates that the economy is starting to stabilize with transaction growth improving for the second sequential month,” said Silvio Tavares, senior vice president of Investor Relations and Decision Support at First Data. “Although sales volumes for the start of the holiday shopping season have been strong, merchants will still need to be cautious to see if the trend continues for the rest of the season.”
