Supermarket giant Tesco is hoping to keep its customers’ loyal by offering double Clubcard points from Monday.Shoppers will receive two points for every £1 that they spend in stores or online from next week.
The points are turned into vouchers which can be worth up to four times their face value if they are spent at restaurants, cinemas and attractions which are partners with the supermarket.
Tesco said the promotion was its way of saying a big thank-you to shoppers and follows the success of its Double Up scheme which gave twice as many reward points on selected items.
Almost half a million new Clubcard customers signed up in just three months after Double Up began.
But the move will be seen by many as an attempt to regain its falling market share.
Tesco reported its worst Christmas in almost 20 years in 2008 and its market share fell from 31.3 per cent to 30.7 per cent in the 12 weeks to December 28.
In June the chain said a 4.3 per cent increase in first quarter sales was a “solid start” although the result lagged behind the 7.3 per cent of its resurgent competitor Bradford-based Wm Morrison.
Tesco said the scheme has been launched now so that vouchers arrive before Christmas.
Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com, said: “Tesco is really aiming to drive new custom through its loyalty cards, as this is the second such big announcement in recent months.”
