Paperless Coupons Lead to Heightened Customer Engagement at Walgreens

Walgreens launched paperless coupons in 2014 and since then it has seen a continual increase in monthly redemptions, with more than 135 million total coupons clipped through the program. Now, according to Adam Crouch, Director of Digital Commerce Product Management for Walgreens, the company is taking paperless coupons to another level, adding another layer of convenience that will spark heightened customer engagement.

“When a customer is looking at a product on Walgreens.com or in our app (say to check inventory in a store near her), if there’s a manufacturer coupon available, we’ll proactively tell the customer right on that product page, and make it easy to digitally clip it with just a tap, and have it automatically applied when she buys the item in store,” Crouch told Loyalty360. “Coupons were previously only visible in the coupons hub, but now that we proactively show customers coupons on the product pages, it opens it up to a whole new set of people who don’t regularly use coupons. Previously, coupons could only be redeemed in-store. Now they can also be redeemed when placing an order on Walgreens.com or in the Walgreens app.”

Walgreens customers now have the ability to redeem paperless coupons from Walgreens and manufacturers for online purchases, as well as in-store purchases. Additionally, offers can now be “clipped” on product detail pages and in search results on Walgreens.com, and through the Walgreens mobile app.

Both new features are the drugstore chain’s latest enhancements to its paperless coupon offering, making it faster and easier for customers to find and redeem the latest promotions and deals.

“The new features of the program are another step in our omnichannel retail approach that conveniently connects customers to stores through the Walgreens mobile app or Walgreens.com,” Crouch said.

Walgreens paperless coupons are the electronic coupons available to the more than 85 million active Balance® Rewards members through Walgreens.com/coupons or the Walgreens mobile app. Customers can search and “clip” hundreds of offers in a variety of categories from Walgreens and other manufacturers. Clipped offers are automatically saved to a customer’s Balance Rewards card and can be seamlessly applied in-store at checkout when a customer uses their Balance Rewards card. Now, customers also have the ability to use their clipped offers while shopping online at Walgreens.com or through the Walgreens mobile app.

Walgreens continues to enhance and simplify paperless coupons by offering manufacturer coupons through a partnership with Quotient (previously Coupons.com Incorporated). Walgreens also plans to offer digital redemption and clipping from product pages for its Weekly Ad and Monthly Savings Book later this summer to give customers more savings opportunities.
