Back to School and Back to Saving with Winn-Dixie

Winn-Dixie, an American supermarket chain based out of Florida, is helping customers save big on back to school. Not only do low price points, extensive discounts, and rewards support local students, but the brand’s new Community Bag with a Giving Tag program, exclusively offered in August, further supports students. For each purchase of the specially designed reusable bag sold for $2.99, Winn-Dixie will donate $1 to a local partner school. This will ensure staff is equipped with the necessary resources to set students up for success.

“We know our customers are looking for convenience and affordability, and Winn-Dixie is dedicated to helping families save valuable time and money during the busy back-to-school season. By providing winning savings families can count on and giving back to our neighborhood schools through initiatives like our Community Bag with a Giving Tag program, we remain committed to ensuring every student has the resources and nutrition they need for a successful academic year. Together, we can help our future leaders thrive both in and out of the classroom,” said Raymond Rhee, Chief People Officer for Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie grocery stores.

Additionally, Winn-Dixie’s Price Hold program and its line of Own Brand products allow customers to save big on staple items at low prices. Customers can maximize savings when they use Winn-Dixie’s loyalty program, which offers exclusive perks and coupons.

Etsy Announces Introduction of New Loyalty Program

Etsy, an American e-commerce company that distributes handmade items, announced plans to unveil its first-ever loyalty program to boost sales. Beginning September 2024, Etsy will test its new program, labeled “Etsy Insider.” Select buyers will receive an invitation to the program, with perks ranging from nationwide free shipping to exclusive discounts.

Raina Moskowitz, Etsy’s Chief Operating and Marketing Officer, stated in an interview, “We want people to start their shopping journey on Etsy rather than come to Etsy when they’re just looking for something very specific.”

The company hopes to expand Etsy’s market share and brand identity with this foray into customer loyalty. Specifically, Etsy Insider aims to reverse declines in sales experienced by the company since COVID-19. Executives will decide on a nationwide rollout of the program based on consumer feedback.

Etsy also offers an interactive “Gift Hub” for customers.

Maryland Addresses Gift Card Fraud with Legislation

The Gift Card Scams Prevention Act of 2024 was signed by Gov. Wes Moore as efforts to combat gift card “draining” increase. Maryland now mandates that gift cards distributed in shopping centers must be encased in secure packaging. This action should prohibit thieves from illegally obtaining the numbers displayed on the back of gift cards. The new law will also expand to online distributions, as merchants must register gift cards sold online with the Office of the Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Protection and also train their employees to identify fraud.

Gift card fraud accounted for $220M+ in losses in 2023. In most scams, fraudsters steal gift cards from retail stores, drain the balances, and then return them to the retailer’s shelves, leaving them worthless to unknowing shoppers, who then, in turn, buy the cards. AARP reported in 2022 that around 25% of U.S. consumers have been impacted by diminished gift card funds.
