Delta Expands Aeromexico Partnership in Pursuit of Customer Experience

Delta Airlines has partnered in some capacity with Mexican airline Aeroméxico for 22 years, but the two travel companies have now expanded that partnership to form a “transborder alliance” that will see benefits coming for patrons of both sides of the deal. The deal has been in talks for the better part of a year, but was only recently approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation according to antitrust regulations.

"This agreement will mark the beginning of a new era in the aviation of North America, as the first and the largest cross-border alliance between Mexico and the United States," said Aeroméxico CEO Andrés Conesa. "It is the next step in our relationship, and our networks will provide more benefits to our customers while increasing the options for connectivity, products and services."

The alliance will have a tangible effect on customer experience for travelers; gates and lounges stand to improve through joint investment from the companies, essentially doubling the focus on CX throughout the travel process. In addition, the partnership opens up additional flights and destinations to customers, further emphasizing the customer-facing impact of the move.

"Together, Delta and Aeroméxico are stronger in the U.S.-Mexico market than either airline can be on its own," said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. "The partnership will make it possible for us to offer customers more flights to more destinations, with more choices every time someone travels across the border. We will offer industry-leading reliability, great service and an unmatched array of options."

Delta’s new deal with Aeroméxico comes on the heels of the announcement that it would be severing ties with Alaska Airlines, effective April 30th. In filling this void, Delta shows its commitment to providing flyers with the customer experience that comes with joint efforts from top brands.

The two airlines are among the largest in their respective countries. Delta offers hubs in Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. Aeromexico offers a similar presence in Mexico, with hubs in Monterrey, Guadalajara, and the capital city of Mexico City.
