Walmart and Sam’s Club are transforming the retail landscape through a new partnership with OpenAI, making shopping smarter, faster, and more intuitive. Customers will soon be able to complete purchases directly within ChatGPT using a feature called Instant Checkout.
This AI-driven approach moves beyond the traditional search-and-scroll model of online shopping, allowing users to simply chat about what they need, whether it’s planning meals or restocking supplies, and receive personalized product recommendations and seamless checkout options in return. It’s a shift from transactional browsing to a fully interactive, conversational shopping experience.
Walmart Inc. President and CEO Doug McMillon said, “For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change. There is a native AI experience coming that is multi-media, personalized and contextual. We are running towards that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships, including this important step with OpenAI.”
OpenAI Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman added, “We’re excited to partner with Walmart to make everyday purchases a little simpler. It’s just one way AI will help people every day under our work together.”
Walmart and Sam’s Club have been actively implementing AI across their operations. Rather than reacting to customer needs after they arise, AI is now helping predict and plan ahead, what Walmart describes as “agentic commerce.” This proactive model enables the technology to anticipate shoppers’ needs before they even realize them.
Beyond customer-facing tools, Walmart is also integrating AI deeply into its internal systems. From reducing fashion production lead times by up to 18 weeks to resolving customer service issues 40% faster, AI is already streamlining key business processes. Walmart is also investing in its workforce, providing AI tools, training, and certifications.
