The age of digital coupons is about to explode with Target’s announcement that it’s launching a mobile-device coupon program at all of its stores.

Shoppers can get digital coupons on their cellphones and redeem them at any Target store in the U.S. by having the cashier scan in the bar code from the phone screen.

Register at the Target website, or download the free Target iPhone app.

Target’s coupons will have an expiration date and can be used only once. The store will issue new coupons each month as older ones expire.  Coupons can’t be used for purchases from Target.com.

Retailers have flirted with the concept of scannable coupons since 2008, but technology didn’t allow for a full-scale campaign. Now, research indicates mobile coupons are redeemed at a 5 percent to 20 percent rate,  compared with about 1 percent for print coupons.

Target’s scannable coupons aren’t tailored to the interest of the specific customer, although it’s something the retailer is considering.
