REI set to Reward Patrons by Opening Re/Supply Store with Lightly Used Apparel & Gear

Sustainability is a value that outdoor enthusiasts take very seriously, and retailer REI believes in listening to what is important to their customers. Capitalizing on the outdoor apparel and gear brand’s popular “garage sale” events that offered gently used products for sale at a discounted price, the co-op announced the opening of their new Re/Supply Store in Clackamas, Oregon, scheduled to open its doors to members in August of 2023. Located in Clackamas Town Center, the 16,113 square-foot store will open a few doors down from the co-op's existing store that has served the outdoor enthusiast community since 2007. The new location will join the co-op's Re/Supply store in Manhattan Beach, California, which opened in 2020.

"As a member-owned co-op, we have a responsibility to preserve the long-term health of the planet," said Bob Cagle, REI regional director. "Our Re/Supply offering reimagines the lifecycle of outdoor products and helps keep gear where it belongs—out on trails, waterways and other natural places. Opening a Re/Supply store in the community builds on the popularity of our used program that is enjoyed by many Oregonians."

Cagle added that the new location will further contribute to the popularity of the co-op program that many Oregonians already use. REI reports that there are more than 303,000 active members for the program in the Portland area. A lifetime membership to the program costs a one-time fee of $30, which provides access not only to the Re/Supply store but offers significant discounts on services such as the labor costs on flat-tire repair, ski waxing, and provides a loyalty program that boasts 10% back to members on qualified purchases.

The inventory at the store will change frequently and be made up of gently used products that have been returned or recycled through trade-in programs promoted by the brand to support the co-op's 2030 climate commitments as well as support the values important to their loyal customer base. With a recent study indicating that as many as 68% of millenials base their brand loyalty on shared values, this is a smart move by REI.
