Microsoft Expands Autonomous AI Agents to Compete with Salesforce
Microsoft is set to roll out its autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) agents to a broader audience next month, allowing businesses to develop their own customizable AI agents through Copilot Studio. The move follows Salesforce’s recent introduction of Agentforce, a similar platform enabling enterprises to create autonomous agents. Microsoft initially announced the agents in May, but they have been limited to private previews until now. By moving to public preview, Microsoft will enable more organizations to deploy AI agents as virtual assistants capable of handling complex tasks, aiming to integrate AI more deeply within business workflows.
At its “AI Tour” event in London, Microsoft also revealed plans to introduce ten new autonomous agents within Dynamics 365, its platform for enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management (CRM). These new AI tools are specifically designed to assist in sales, service, finance, and supply chain management, automating repetitive tasks and reducing response times.
Demonstrating the technology, Microsoft Corporate VP of Modern Work and Business Applications, Jared Spataro, illustrated an example of how consulting firm McKinsey developed an AI agent. The agent autonomously processed email inquiries, found appropriate team members for follow-ups, and drafted responses without human input. Spataro said, “We’re excited about this because of the business value it can drive.” The process reduced lead time by up to 90%, according to McKinsey.
