Tripadvisor recently released its fourth Transparency Report, which is published biannually to offer a comprehensive analysis of the global community’s contributions. The report highlights shifting trends in reviews and user submissions from the previous year.
Tripadvisor Head of Trust & Safety Becky Foley said: “As the world’s largest travel guidance platform, no one has a greater commitment to ensuring that the content on our site is reliable and trustworthy. While many companies are scaling back their Trust and Safety efforts, Tripadvisor remains steadfast in prioritizing trust. These actions reaffirm our unwavering commitment to consumer protection and our leadership in the travel industry through integrity and innovation. As Tripadvisor celebrates its 25th anniversary, the company is proud to have spent those years dedicated to fostering a trusted resource for travelers and businesses.”
The report shows significant growth in content submissions, with almost 80 million contributions from travelers in 2024, marking a 9% increase from the previous year. The growth was driven by an increase in reviews related to experiences, activities, and attractions. Community engagement remained robust, with business owners responding to more than 11 million reviews and travelers engaging in discussions on Tripadvisor’s forums. This level of participation reflects the platform's growing popularity as a go-to resource for travel advice and planning.
Meanwhile, a key focus of Tripadvisor’s ongoing efforts is ensuring the integrity of its content through a multi-layered moderation process that includes automation, community input, and human oversight to ensure fairness and reliability. The report reveals that 87.8% of reviews submitted met the company’s automation standards, with a smaller percentage undergoing further review by moderators. Tripadvisor’s Trust and Safety team also played a crucial role in moderating 4.2 million reviews to maintain high-quality content on the platform.
In its fight against fake reviews, Tripadvisor continues to enhance its fraud detection efforts. In 2024, the company successfully identified and removed 2.7 million fraudulent reviews. The fake reviews were often businesses attempting to manipulate their rankings through ‘review boosting’ or incentivized feedback. Additionally, the rise of AI-generated content has prompted Tripadvisor to implement stricter policies, removing more than 200,000 AI-written reviews to preserve authenticity. To further enhance industry standards, Tripadvisor has partnered with other major platforms to form the Coalition for Trusted Reviews to combat fake reviews and promote stronger consumer protections across the travel sector.
