Google Collabs With Warby Parker and Kering to Launch AI-Powered Smart Glasses

Google is re-entering the smart glasses market through partnerships with Warby Parker and luxury eyewear company Kering. The tech giant has committed up to $150 million to support the deal with Warby Parker, with equal investments split evenly between equity and funding and product development and commercialization. Google earlier had an unsuccessful venture called Google Glass, which was halted partly due to privacy concerns.

The upcoming smart glasses are set to launch post-2025 and will feature advanced multimodal AI capabilities, allowing the devices to interpret and respond to multiple data inputs like text, audio, images, and video. Warby Parker said the glasses will be available in both prescription and non-prescription lenses. The devices will run on Google’s Android XR platform, which supports use on headsets and glasses. 

Warby Parker Co-Chief Executive Dave Gilboa said, “Looking ahead, we believe multimodal AI is perfectly suited for glasses, enabling real-time context and intelligence to augment a wearer’s surroundings as they move through the world.”

The collaboration will allow Wyndham Rewards members to earn points when placing mobile To Go orders from over 1,500 Applebee’s locations while staying at any Hotel by Wyndham, with the added perk of free delivery.
