AMC Improves CX By Adding New Subscription Tier

AMC Theatres has designed a new tier, AMC Stubs A-List, for its movie subscription program. The tier was available to subscribers as of June 26, 2018. This tier provides guests with up to three movies per week, along with all the benefits of AMC Stubs Premiere, for $19.95 (plus tax) per month.

Enrolled members can see films at any available showtime at any AMC location, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, Prime, and BigD films. Members secure tickets through the AMC website or on the AMC Theatres smartphone app. According to USA Today, the service has drawn in 175,000 subscribers.

The AMC Stubs A-List tier is the third of AMC’s loyalty program, following the AMC Stubs Insider and AMC Stubs Premiere tiers. It includes all Premiere benefits, such as free upgrades on popcorn and soda, free refills on large popcorn, express service at the box office and the concession stand, and no online ticketing fees. In addition, Stubs A-List includes the same points-redemption system offered to Stubs Premiere members. For every 5,000 points earned, members receive a 10 percent credit toward future AMC purchases.

“We believe that our guests will be interested in this type of program,” says Adam Aron, CEO and president of AMC theatres. “The AMC Stubs A-List tier rewards guests with up to three movies per week, for one simple, sustainable price.”

The new tier runs Friday through Thursday each week, which coincides with traditional new movie openings. Because the tier resets each Friday, enrolled members will always have the option to see their desired new releases. (Movie viewings do not carry over from one week to next, however.)

Members can even see all three available movies on the same day, with a two-hour buffer in between each showtime. They can also see movies they have previously seen, a feature not available with some competing subscription services. Additionally, members can reserve opening night seats for up to three movies at a time.

Tad Fordyce, senior vice president of loyalty at Epsilon, weighs in on the program. “Early enrollment numbers signal AMC is generating consumer interest in its new loyalty tier, a solid offer for movie-goers combining economic value with the exclusivity loyalty members crave. Physical theaters in general are in fierce competition with Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, and other streaming services, but AMC can use its physical location as an asset to further differentiate the in-theater experience and make members feel special.  Linking the benefits of the new Stubs A-List tier to its loyalty program is a good strategy to build deeper connections with customers while also creating a revenue stream through the subscription model.”

“Since its inception in 2011, AMC Stubs has continued to evolve to meet the needs of its customers,” says Aron. “AMC Stubs A-List is AMC’s next evolution of delivering amazing benefits to our loyal customers, and we’re excited to continue to grow the program by leaps and bounds.”
