On this date in 1848, the state of Wisconsin was officially admitted into the Union. It was the 30th state to do so, coming off the heels of Iowa’s similar recognition a mere year and a half earlier. Interestingly enough, the village of Belmont (which boasted a population of 986 at the conclusion of the 2010 census), was initially chosen to be the region’s capital, until it was changed to the booming metropolis of Madison prior to finalizing statehood.
