Rite Aid Survey Highlights Pharmacists’ Untapped Potential and Opportunities for Greater Health Support
Rite Aid recently released the results of a survey that explored how consumers interact with pharmacists and identified areas where pharmacists could expand their role in supporting overall health. The findings suggest that pharmacists are underutilized in many communities, despite their potential to provide a broader range of health services. The survey revealed that while many consumers are familiar with traditional pharmacy services like medication dispensing (72%), OTC product guidance (64%), immunizations (53%), and wellness advice (53%), a significant portion is unaware of more specialized offerings such as medication therapy management (27%) or smoking cessation programs (24%). Moreover, while 55% of respondents recognize that pharmacists can assist with minor healthcare concerns, fewer are aware of the broader health services available, including women’s health support. These findings highlight an opportunity for pharmacists to better educate the public about the full range of health services they can provide.
Rite Aid Chief Pharmacy Officer Karen Staniforth said, “As industry research shows, many consumers visit their pharmacist far more frequently than their healthcare provider as patient appointments can take weeks to secure. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact personalized pharmacist-consumer relationships can have on health outcomes. Pharmacists can speak to and advise on many aspects of an individual’s health, from medication management, testing for flu and strep, and travel health consultations, to prescribing certain medications in select states. Despite their accessibility in the community, we’re seeing a gap in how consumers are utilizing their pharmacy or pharmacist to their full capabilities.”
The survey also highlighted generational differences in engagement with pharmacists. Younger consumers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, tend to spend more time with pharmacists. In contrast, older generations, including Baby Boomers and Gen X, primarily view their pharmacist as a dispenser of medication. Despite 62% of respondents considering their pharmacist part of their healthcare team, three-quarters don’t have a personal relationship with one, and many don’t discuss potential medication interactions.
