GameStop Canada Acquired by Entrepreneur Stephan Tetrault, Rebranding as EB Games
GameStop Canada, officially known as Electronics Boutique Canada Inc., has announced its acquisition by Stephan Tetrault, a French-Canadian entrepreneur, founder of Imports Dragon, a Montreal-based toy manufacturer. Tetrault plans to relaunch 185 retail locations under the name EB Games Canada, a brand familiar to longtime gamers. The move marks GameStop's exit from Canada.
Tetrault spoke about the acquisition, saying, “This isn’t just a business decision—it’s about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved. We’re going to build something special here, with community, nostalgia, and innovation at its heart.”
Tetrault is also co-owner of McFarlane Toys, an American action figure manufacturer, and recently became a partner in the Canadian educational toy retailer Mastermind Toys. GameStop Corp., based in the U.S., previously revealed plans to divest its Canadian and French units as part of a broader strategy to cut costs and reassess its global holdings. The company gained fame during the “meme stock” phenomenon, where online investor hype temporarily boosted its stock despite operational struggles. While its revenue dropped 27% last year to $3.82 billion, GameStop’s net income saw a surprising rise to $131.3 million, up from $6.7 million the previous year.
