Chewy experienced a modest customer growth during the third quarter of 2024, adding 160,000 new active customers, bringing the total number of customers to its website to 20.2 million. Despite a slight year-over-year decline of 0.5%, the pet retailer has successfully leveraged enhanced customer experiences and effective marketing strategies.
CEO Sumit Singh highlighted the role of the company’s revamped mobile app, which emphasizes convenience and has led to a notable increase in unique users and app engagement.
Chewy also introduced its in-person veterinary clinics, Chewy Vet Care, which has been positively received, with high customer satisfaction scores and a strong correlation between in-store visits and online shopping.
Chewy has been focusing on refining its online and app-based shopping experiences, and it has been a significant factor in its recent success.
Singh said, “We are continuously rolling out enhancements to our on-site and in-app experiences to ensure we are providing an even more enjoyable and convenient shopping journey for pet parents.”
The company reported a 4.8% increase in net sales year-over-year for the third quarter, settling at $2.88 billion, surpassing expectations. A key component of Chewy’s strategy is its enhanced marketing efforts aimed at broadening its audience base. By improving its website and app, Chewy has strengthened its ability to convert visitor interest into actual purchases.
Additionally, Chewy is refining its ability to identify customer segments, which is helping boost repeat business and increase engagement with features such as automatic shipments and mobile app use. Chewy plans to continue with this strategy during 2025.
Looking ahead, Chewy is focusing on expanding its paid Chewy+ membership program. Although still in its early stages, the program is showing promise by driving increased sales and customer interaction with the mobile app.
Singh said, “Overall, we’re playing a pretty strong playbook, continuing to differentiate ourselves, both in terms of the basics of the category on price and convenience and assortment, but also in bringing new innovations to life.”
