MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 24—In business, it’s not what you know or even who you know, but who knows you that matters, suggests a new Robert Half Management Resources survey. Almost one in three (28 percent) chief financial officers (CFOs) interviewed said staying connected through professional groups is the best way for accounting and finance managers to enhance their professional visibility. Active participation on social media sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter came in a close second, with 22 percent of the response.
The survey was developed by Robert Half Management Resources, the world’s premier provider of senior-level accounting and finance professionals on a project and interim basis. It was conducted by an independent research firm and includes responses from 1,400 CFOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies with 20 or more employees.
CFOs were asked, “Which of the following is the most useful way for accounting and finance managers to enhance their professional visibility?” Their responses:
Connect through professional/alumni groups or events
Engage through social media (e.g., LinkedIn, Twitter, blogging)
Publish articles in trade/business journals
Volunteer or participate in charitable work
Speak at industry events or webinars
Don’t know/no answer
McDonald noted, “As social networking continues to gain popularity, it’s especially important to use online tools to build credibility and visibility in the business community.”

About the Survey
The national survey was developed by Robert Half Management Resources. It was conducted by an independent research firm and is based on more than 1,400 telephone interviews with CFOs from a random sample of U.S. companies with 20 or more employees. For the survey to be statistically representative and ensure that companies from all segments are represented, the sample was stratified by geographic region and number of employees. The results were then weighted to reflect the proper proportion of employees within each region.
