Luxury travel is no longer limited to the ultra-wealthy. New research from Arrivia shows that a growing segment of “aspiring luxury” travelers, households with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, is increasingly driving demand for higher-end travel experiences. Rather than viewing luxury as an all-or-nothing purchase, these consumers are selectively upgrading parts of their trips, creating new opportunities for travel brands and loyalty programs to capture incremental spending.
The definition of luxury itself is also shifting. Instead of being centered on price or exclusivity, travelers now prioritize comfort, convenience, and ease. In fact, comfort ranks as the top factor for 34% of respondents, followed by attributes like privacy and attentive service. For many aspiring luxury travelers, reducing planning complexity and friction is what elevates an experience, signaling a broader move toward practicality and seamlessness over extravagance.
The research also highlights how luxury engagement spans generations. Millennials make up the largest share of aspiring luxury travelers, while Gen Z is participating in premium experiences such as safaris, luxury events, and private stays. This indicates that luxury travel is increasingly driven by preferences and life stage, not just accumulated wealth, with younger consumers willing to invest in meaningful, high-end experiences.
The report points to strong momentum in categories like luxury cruises and loyalty programs. Nearly half of respondents have taken a luxury cruise, drawn by all-inclusive, low-friction experiences that combine comfort and personalization. At the same time, 43% of consumers belong to at least one luxury travel loyalty program, underscoring how brands can deepen engagement by aligning rewards with evolving definitions of value and convenience.
