Loyalty360 Reads: March 28: Southwest Airlines Launch New Tickets, Apple’s iPhone Hardware Subscription Service, and More

Southwest Airlines Boost Revenue with New Ticket Type
Southwest Airlines announced the launch of new type of ticket with some additional perks to boost revenue and appeal to business travelers.

The new ticket option will rank above Southwest’s cheapest option and be positioned below two pricier tiers. Additional features include: the option to cancel flights and give the credit to a friend, family member, co-worker or anyone else who is a member of Southwest’s frequent flier program; and same-day flight changes without paying any price difference.

This strategy aims to appeal to both bargain hunters and big spenders while competing with discount carriers. The new offering and other upgrades to Southwest’s business-focused fares will appeal to both corporate and leisure travelers.

Apple to Offer iPhone Hardware Subscription Service
Apple is working on a subscription service for the iPhone and other hardware products, a move that could make device ownership similar to paying a monthly app fee.

The service would be Apple’s biggest push yet into automatically recurring sales, allowing users to subscribe to hardware for the first time -- rather than just digital services.

The program would differ from an installment program in that the monthly charge wouldn’t be the price of the device split across 12 or 24 months. Rather, it would be a yet-to-be-determined monthly fee that depends on which device the user chooses.

A subscription program tied to an Apple account would likely be simpler to manage than a carrier program or even the installment plans for the Apple Card.
