And the Olympic Gold Medal Ads Go To…
Well, the Olympics are over and the United States did, well, OK. So who were the big winners? Well, NBC won gold by collecting $900 million in ad sales and exceeding its guarantees for the number of viewers watching the Games, according to an article in CMO.com. A number of brands also won big as well, particularly Cheetos. The cheesy, crunchy, curly snack brand partnered ahead of the Olympics with the Game’s biggest surprise: The U.S. curling team. It created a music video titled “Teach Me How to Curl” and pushed a social media effort by encouraging fans to post their own videos and use the #DoTheCurl hashtag.

Walmart Falters in Its Online Battle with Amazon
Walmart has made great strides in its online business, as it tries to keep pace with Amazon. But, according to an article in Business Insider, Walmart saw a significant decline in its online growth in its most recently quarterly earnings call. Its online growth was 23 percent, but that is compared to 50 percent growth in the previous quarter. We wrote about McMillon in January when he participated in a keynote speech at the National Retail Federation Conference in New York City.

Can Augmented Reality Become the Next Big Channel?
Is augment reality the next big customer channel? Yep. At least according to an article on CMSWire. Just as the original iPhone introduced the world to touch screens and apps for everything, the article says, Apple’s iPhone X shows that future digital interactions are likely to be “augmented.” Augmented reality technology superimposes digital images on a phone-screen view of the real world to deliver a composite of the two. IKEA lets users of its app see how furniture in its catalog would look in a home. In November, we wrote about Toys “R” Us when the company introduced Play Chaser, which is its new, free-to-play augmented reality app.
