Instagram Recruits Sports World to Sell Merchandise
It is not uncommon for sports stars, teams and leagues to use Instagram as an outlet to build relationships with fans. However, that relationship is starting to change as now teams and athletes are using the platform to sell products, too. Last month, tennis star Serena Williams and her S by Serena fashion brand released a new sequin jacket that could only be purchased through Instagram’s “Checkout” feature. Instagram drove more than 50 percent of sales for the S by Serena brand in the week following the jacket’s introduction. Instagram is making commerce a major priority as consumers increasingly flock to mobile devices to shop. Smartphones accounted for 35.6 percent of online sales from Nov. 1 to Dec. 2, up from 28.8% last year, according to Adobe Analytics.

Chipotle staff can call nurse to prove they’re not just hungover
As a part of strict new safety practices following a series of health scares, Chipotle Mexican Grill gets sick employees to call a nurse — to prove they’re not just hung over; the company’s CEO has revealed.  “We have nurses on call, so that if you say, ‘Hey, I’ve been sick,’ you get the call into the nurse,” CEO Brian Niccol told a conference this week. “The nurse validates that it’s not a hangover — you’re really sick — and then we pay for the day off to get healthy again.” A spokeswoman later insisted that it was a voluntary service, and not one enforced to catch out staff. “You don’t have to call a nurse if you’re taking a sick day,” she stressed, adding, “All employees who call off sick for any reason receive paid time off.”

How Nordstrom uses robots and shelves inspired by ants to deliver lipstick faster
Retailers are looking to solved a variety of problems, two of which are how to cut costs, and how to get products to customers as quickly as possible. Nordstrom thinks it has found a solution that will help it do both, starting with a warehouse in California. The brand has tapped two new partners, robotics supply chain company Attabotics and parcel-sorting provider Tompkins Robotics, to test a more modern facility. If successful, Nordstrom could expand its use to eight other U.S. distribution centers. The combination of Attabotics’ and Tompkins Robotics’ technologies uses 90 percent less space than other alternatives and allows the company to be nimbler and stock more inventory.
