S.L. Benfica has officially unveiled a bold strategy for Estádio da Luz, reimagining the stadium as a global benchmark for integrated sports and entertainment destinations. The ambitious redevelopment is designed to modernize facilities and enhance the fan experience while deepening the club’s connection with its supporters and the wider Lisbon community.

Developed in collaboration with the internationally renowned architectural firm Populous, the original designers of Estádio da Luz, and Lisbon-based Saraiva + Associados, the masterplan represents a strategic evolution of the stadium. The project repositions the venue as a world-class civic and cultural hub, aligned with the most innovative stadium developments across Europe and beyond.

At the heart of the plan is a comprehensive reimagining of the stadium’s precinct into a vibrant, multi-use district. A new 10,000-seat indoor arena will be designed to host major concerts, esports, cultural programming, and sporting events. This will be accompanied by two additional state-of-the-art indoor sports halls with seating for 2,500 and 1,500 spectators respectively, replacing existing facilities and expanding the club’s ability to host basketball, volleyball, boxing, and more.

The masterplan also includes a brand-new 25x25 meter community swimming pool and a new theatre and event space with capacity for 500 guests. A rooftop football pitch and integrated running track will provide immersive training and fitness experiences set against the Lisbon skyline. Additional residential and commercial developments will support the economic vitality of the area while contributing to the long-term sustainability of the club.

S.L. Benfica President Rui Costa said, “This is an ambitious and strategic project, focused on our members, fans, and the continued growth of the club, which we intend to begin implementing immediately. Our aim is to enhance the stadium and wider masterplan facilities to support all sports and further strengthen Benfica’s position, both in Portugal and around the world, as the country’s leading sporting institution – with completion in time for the major international competitions that Portugal will host. It is a project in the true Benfica spirit – one that enhances the competitive environment, deepens the club experience, and welcomes all those who want to experience what it means to be part of the Chama Imensa, the greatest in Portugal. It is a commitment to make us stronger, more valuable, and an even greater leader.”

Populous Associate Principal and Lead Designer for the project, Michael Forward, added, “The stadium façade articulates a contemporary architectural language rooted in Lisbon’s evolving urban narrative. A restrained palette of neutral tones fosters a seamless dialogue with the surrounding masterplan, while vertical louvres lend both rhythm and porosity to the envelope. The overall effect pays homage to Benfica’s heritage while creating a striking visual effect looking confidently to the future.”
