Disney Invests a Whopping $1.5B in Epic Games, Will Work with Fortnite Studio

Disney plans to work with Fortnite studio to develop new games and an “entertainment universe” following an investment of $1.5B in Epic Games. The investment represents Disney’s largest made in the gaming space to date.

“We’ve entered into a strategic relationship with Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, to not only invest in the company, Epic — we took a minority stake, a $1.5 investment — but we’re also creating with them a huge Disney Universe that will be for gaming, and for play, and for watching, and even for shopping,” says Disney CEO Bob Iger.

“Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio. Now we’re collaborating on something entirely new to build a persistent, open, and interoperable ecosystem that will bring together the Disney and Fortnite communities,” says Tim Sweeney, Epic Games founder and CEO.

Disney and Epic have worked together before on adding iconic characters, like those from Marvel or Star Wars, to the Fortnite world and allowing Disney to license superhero figures for video games.

New Flavor from Coke Endeavors to Attract New Customer Base

Coca-Cola is bringing new soft drink choices to market in a bid to gain younger customers. On February 19, U.S. and Canadian soda drinkers will find Coca-Cola Spiced and Coca-Cola Spiced Zero Sugar next to well-known favorites. A “hint of raspberry” is promised alongside the flavors drinkers would note in regular Coke.

Noting the trend to more spicy preferences, the brand leveraged customer research and developed Coca-Cola Spiced in a mere seven weeks versus a year — the time it typically takes to create a new beverage.

“If you go to the aisles, you’ll see the amount of spiciness has gone up because consumers’ taste palettes have evolved. We realized that could be an opportunity for us,” says Coca-Cola’s North American marketing chief, Shakir Moin.

Coke continues to experiment with adding other flavors to its repertoire to attract the next generation of consumers. On February 17, Coca-Cola Happy Tears will be sold through TikTok in the U.S. and Great Britain. What do “happy tears” taste like? According to the brand: salt and mineral flavors — alongside its signature cola.
