Walmart Invests in Mobile Units for Disaster Response to Aid Communities

In an ongoing mission to improve lives and local communities, Walmart and Sam’s Club are pooling their business and philanthropic resources to invest in disaster response and bolster community resilience in the midst of unexpected devastation.

On the precipe of what is forecast to be a historically destructive hurricane season, Walmart is investing in new mobile units for deployment during disaster response events by nonprofit organizations.

The mobile units will facilitate essential services and resources in short supply during natural disasters when the population loses power, internet, cell service, and homes. Some of the services provided by the mobile unit include hot meals, Wi-Fi access, showers, and clean clothes.

Mobile units are often deployed in Walmart Stores and Sam’s Club parking lots in addition to other convenient locations in local communities. Some of the organizations that will provide services in the new mobile units will include Operation BBQ Relief, which will facilitate a mobile kitchen; Information Technology Disaster Resource Center for the provision of Wi-Fi Hotspots and mobile charging; and Matthew 25: Ministries, which will offer mobile shower trailers and mobile laundry units.

Walmart’s Mobile Relief Kitchen will be operated nationwide by Walmart drivers, aiding thousands affected by severe weather events and wildfires. Walmart’s comprehensive disaster strategy involves its emergency management team and company associates coordinating with local governments and response organizations to evaluate impacted communities more quickly, deliver necessary merchandise, and support affected communities. Since 2022, Walmart, the Walmart Foundation, and Sam’s Club have donated more than $55M for disaster preparedness and response.
