Tweet to Transact, Twitter Acquires CardSpring

Twitter just announced the acquisition of commerce application platform CardSpring.  CardSpring is a service that allows developers to create card-linked offers, electronic coupons, loyalty cards, and virtual currencies compatible with credit cards.  This new addition aims to bring social media into commerce beyond typical hashtagging, retweeting, and overall brand awareness.

Through CardSpring, social media users will have the opportunity to engage with card-linked offers through tweeted discounts.  Later on, when making a purchase in-store at specific retailers, the coupon will automatically be added to your transaction using the credit card information you entered earlier.

This not only benefits consumers, but pushes Twitter further into the world of commerce, yielding actual sales dividends.

CardSpring last year developed a commerce analytics system called CardSpring Connect, a platform that integrates with a retailer’s in-store sale system and provides data linking sales to online promotions and social media activity through Foursquare, Trialpay, Thanx, MOGL, Roximity, OnStripe, and others.

In the war of social commerce, the acquisition of CardSpring is a substantial advancement for Twitter.  With CardSpring, the key to shopper discounts and offerings is only a Tweet away.
