Alaska Airlines announced the launch of an ambitious campaign to make air travel more sustainable. The airline encourages passengers to participate by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) credits during their flight bookings. SAF is a cleaner alternative to jet fuel and can reduce the airline’s carbon footprint.
Members of Alaska Airline’s rewards program can purchase credits that will reduce 5%, 10%, or 20% of their flight’s carbon impact. Every purchase of SAF credit can reduce the environmental impact of air travel while rewarding participants with an accelerated path to elite status in the airline’s Mileage Plan™. Members purchasing SAF credits earn 500 elite-qualifying miles, or EQMs, for every $100 spent on SAF.
“Alaska is on a journey to make air travel more sustainable with an ambitious goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Now we are inviting our guests to join us on the journey,” said Diana Birkett Rakow, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability, Alaska Airlines. “Today, we’ve launched new options for guests to customize their travel experience, take action on the environmental impact of their trip, and help us scale the market for SAF. SAF is a critical part of aviation’s path to a more sustainable future, and while we use it today, there is not enough SAF available. It will take all of us to grow this market. The more people who know about and support this important technology, the better we can impact efforts to make a sustainable future for air travel a reality.”
The program builds on a successful pilot from late 2023. SAF credits are offered in partnership with climate technology company CHOOOSE and will appear on the same page as other trip add-ons when guests book their trips. The credit option is based on carbon emissions calculations that adhere to the International Air Transport Association’s Recommended Practice 1726. These calculations take into account factors such as aircraft fuel consumption, load factors from Alaska’s operational data, seat configuration, flight path, and cabin class.
