It is always a good practice for a manager to ask an employee how he or she likes to be recognized during the hiring or onboarding process, as people have different preferences and are motivated by different things. For example, some like to be recognized in front of their peers and some prefer reinforcement during a one-on-one meeting. Once a manager knows how employees like to be recognized, they are better able to engage and retain their best people.
