Hannaford Launches Elder Fraud Prevention Program in Maine

Hannaford Supermarkets is introducing a new program to help older adults in Maine become more skilled in recognizing and reporting fraud. The program is called the Maine Rx Elder Fraud Program and is being implemented across 60 Hannaford in-store pharmacies in the state. As part of the program, informational brochures will be attached to prescription bags, providing seniors with tips on how to spot common scams. This effort was developed in partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, the Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention, and AARP Maine.

U.S. Attorney Darcie N. McElwee issued a statement, saying, “[W]ith approximately nine out of 10 people over age 65 having at least one regular prescription, pharmacists will be a key partner in our efforts to inform this population.”

Elder fraud is a growing problem, with over 101,000 U.S. seniors defrauded out of $3.4 billion in 2023, including $7.1 million in Maine alone. Moreover, elderly people are hesitant to report scams. According to Sara Lane, Hannaford’s manager of pharmacy clinical services, caretakers and older adults comprise a “large portion” of Hannaford’s customer base.
