1Hotel Brand Gets Down to Earth with New Environmentally Friendly Effort
Luxury hotel brand 1Hotel is pushing this weekend’s Earth Day celebration to a daily emphasis. The nature-inspired hotel chain, which is part of the Starwood Group, is launching an “Earth Day Every Day” campaign that is designed to raise awareness of environmental issues, specifically around saving the country’s shores. Among the campaign’s efforts are a Phone2Action action center that provides digital space for education and activism; a speaker series at each property; Dinner in the Dark where lights are dimmed to raise awareness of sustainability; a Save Our Shores package in which a portion is donated to the Natural Resources Defense Council; e-letters in each room that guests can send to Congress and governmental organizations; and statement T-shirts. The brand promotes its difference from other hotels as: “We operate from a very simple premise: nature is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way.” It has properties in Manhattan, Brooklyn and South Beach, with new hotels opening in West Hollywood, Cabo, Sunnyvale and Sanya (China). “This brand movement supports our commitment for 1Hotels to not be another hotel brand, but a cause and a platform for change that encourages consistent conversation and action,” says Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group. "Our goal is to be a living laboratory for sustainable living, to incite urgency, and be an example for change amongst our esteemed clientele, the industry and the world. It is 1 world.”

Tire Brands Goodyear, Bridgestone Form Partnership for Distribution
Call it coopetition—that awkward event when you cooperate with your competition—but two of the biggest brands in the tire world are forming a joint venture partnership. The Akron, Ohio-based Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and the Nashville-based Bridgestone Americas Inc., are joining forces by creating TireHub LLC, which will merge their distribution centers in an effort to feed tire dealers and retailers with tires, specifically larger rim diameter premium tires, which are rapidly growing in demand. The partnership will have 80 distribution locations across the country—a combination of the two tire giants current distribution centers—with a headquarters in Atlanta. The rubber hitting the road on the coopetition is subject to Board approvals with both companies, which are expected by June.
