Amazon Scales Up Drone Delivery Service

Amazon has announced plans to deploy its Prime Air drones from same-day delivery sites across the U.S. The drones will become part of the company’s regular fulfillment operations and depart from the same locations as delivery trucks. This integration is a switch from the current program, which has drones flying out of standalone air delivery centers. The company has been using drones for nearly a year to deliver packages up to five pounds on trips under an hour.

Amazon plans to double the number of same-day delivery sites, which are located near population centers and use a streamlined fulfillment process. “Think of products that fit the size and weight capabilities of the drone, like cold medicines and batteries. We place them close to customers at these sites, which enables us to deliver them at our fastest speeds, and now it makes sense to make deliveries even faster via drones,” Amazon said.

Amazon noted it will replace the current drone fleet with new MK30 models by the end of 2024. The MK30 can fly twice as far as the outgoing drones.
